After a successful career as a journeyman sheet metal
worker, Kurt Ruby decided to combine his artistic talents and
his love of art with his knowledge of the sheet metal trade and
thus founded Kurt Ruby Copperworks, Inc. in 1994. Kurt is
carrying on his family tradition as a third generation
coppersmith. He has developed his own unique style and
processes, using some of the same tools his grandfather used
years ago.
His most recent accomplishments include a commission
from The Florida Philharmonic for a 10 year commemorative statue
for presentation to their conductor as well as a commission by
the City of Clearwater, Florida, sister city to Nagano, Japan
for two commemorative "Sun" sculptures, presented to
the Mayor of Nagano and to the head of the 1998 Winter Olympic
committee. Awards for second place in 2004 and 2005 at South
Miami Art Festival are also to be mentioned.
Having Served a formal four year apprenticeship, I use my
fathers and Grandfathers tools; a hand operated rolling mill to
add texture to the metal and old fashioned irons heated in fire
to solder all work. Copper is hand formed over steel stakes to
add shape and form. Patinas are applied and selectively hand
burnished revealing the copper underneath to capture reflected
light. This creates a sense of movement within the copper.
At times I add unique stones and other organic materials found
on my travels to create a dynamic quality to my work. Each piece
is sealed to protect the original work of art. My work ranges
from fine, functional art to large, contemporary interior wall
sculptures. |
